Application
Fucoidan has a variety of biological functions, but the most widely studied anticoagulant activity. Studies have shown that fucoidan extracted from different marine brown algae has different degrees of anticoagulant activity, such as high anticoagulant activity with fucoidan, and anticoagulant activity is halved compared with the former, and almost no resistance Coagulation activity.
In the experimental model of living animals, fucoidan has an inhibitory effect on venous thrombosis and arterial thrombosis. The study found that fucoidan had no anticoagulant activity in vitro, but showed obvious antithrombotic effect in the animal model of venous thrombosis, and the effect was time-dependent, reaching the maximum after 8 hours of administration. The anticoagulant activity may be related to the stimulation of endothelial cells to produce heparin sulfate.
Structure & composition
The structure of fucoidan is very complicated. On the one hand, the fucoidan of different species of brown algae has different chemical compositions. In addition to the main components fucose and sulfate, it also contains other monosaccharides (mannose, galactose, glucose, etc.). And uronic acid, some also have acetyl and protein; on the other hand, the structure of fucoidan in different species of brown algae is also different, and the fucoidan obtained by different extraction methods may also have different structures, Ponce et al. The fucoidan extracted from room temperature mainly consists of fucose, galactose and sulfate, while the fucoidan extracted at 70 °C is mainly composed of fucose and other monosaccharides (most of mannose, small Part of glucose, xylose, rhamnose and galactose), as well as a large amount of uronic acid and a small portion of sulfate.
